Jackie Sinclair R.I.P.

Tributes were paid today to Jackie Sinclair´s family from current Toon boss Chris Hughton and former team-mate Bobby Moncur. Sinclair played 52 games for Newcastle from 1967 to 1969, scoring eight goals. One of those goals helped Newcastle beat Glasgow Rangers in the Fairs Cup semi-final second leg at St James's Park. He went on to play a leading role in United's 6-2 aggregate victory over Hungarian side Ujpesti Dozsa in the final, played over two legs. Born at Culross in Fife, he played on the wing for Dunfermline and Leicester City, before arriving on Tyneside for a near-record fee of £67,500 in December 1967. After a two-year stay with the Magpies, he left to join Sheffield Wednesday. Hughton: "Everyone at the club was very saddened to learn of the untimely death of Jackie Sinclair. "We knew he had been bravely battling cancer and had been unwell for some time. "I'm told Jackie was a terrific player during his time at St James's Park, and was instrumental in helping the club win the Fairs Cup back in 1969. "We offer our condolences to his family, and thank Jackie for everything he did for the Newcastle United club." Moncur: "Jackie was a great lad, very popular and a typical old-fashioned Scottish winger who could beat you on the left or right. "He had a great eye for goal, too, and his loss is a very sad one. "He came along to the 40-year Fairs Cup anniversary dinner at St James's Park last year, and all the lads were delighted to see him there."
