Newcastle United are expected to be extremely active during the summer transfer window.
The Magpies are in a strong position from which to achieve promotion back to the Premier League, with 10 points currently separating themselves and third placed Huddersfield Town.
However, if they do go on to earn their place in the top flight, they must strengthen their squad accordingly over the summer.
And an ideal option could be Stoke City's Glen Johnson.
Right-back has proven to be a problem position for Newcastle this season, with DeAndre Yedlin's persistent injury problems and Jesus Gamez failing to adapt to the robust nature of the English game.
On top of that, Vernon Anita is still yet to agree terms on a new deal. And with Stoke's 32-year-old former England international close to running down his deal at the BET365 Stadium, he could be the perfect addition to Benitez' squad, for little financial outlay.
The Spaniard has actually already signed Johnson once in his career, when he brought the versatile defender to Anfield for £18 million, during his time as Liverpool manager.
Whilst he is obviously not the player he once was, he is still highly capable, and has the ability to play at the top level for another few seasons at least.
Johnson has maintained his physical prowess, and would offer the Tyneside outfit a real attacking threat down the right hand side.
He is also remarkably versatile, and is equally as proficient in the left-back role, which could prove to be invaluable for Newcastle next term.
Benitez will not have thing all his own way, if he decides to make a move for Johnson, however, with a whole host of Premier League clubs interested in obtaining his signature, including West Ham United and Crystal Palace, according to the Sun.
But if the Spaniard does manage to bring the Stoke man to St James' Park this summer, it would be ing as quite the coup.
