Wilkinson has had spells in charge of Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday and most recently has been FA Technical Director. He hasn’t managed a top-flight team since 1996.
Wilkinson is known for his sterile, defensive football and also for ruining Peter Taylor’s great England Under-21 team. It looks like Niall Quinn and Tor Andre Flo need to get cracking with some heading practice if they are going to get on the end of all those punts.
Wilkinson will be assisted by Steve Cotterill, who has this morning resigned as manager of Stoke City. Cotterill has great experience of the lower leagues and this will prove invaluable next season.
It looks as if Bob Murray has followed Leicester’s example of appointing a well known figurehead to take the pressure as the team go down, whilst grooming a long-term successor.
Anyway the appointment of a discredited, has-been like Wilkinson shows that the Mackems have accepted their inevitable relegation this season.
Personally I can’t wait to cheer on the likes of Stoke, Grimsby and Burnley next season.
