But Allardyce is keen to keep experience in the squad, and even if Carr is not his first-choice right-back, the United new manager appears to be happy to keep the Irishman at St James' Park until an offer comes in.
Roy Keane is looking to sign a right-back this summer but he has ruled out the United player.
