Owen missed the best part of two seasons with knee and metatarsal problems, while Duff was sidelined for more than eight months last year with a serious ankle problem.
Keegan: "You have to remember that Michael hadn't played eight matches in a row before I came here, and Damien Duff has had his problems as well.
"It's easy to put that to one side and say it didn't happen, but the reality is that it did.
"They are coming back, but they still need games. You expect those players to get fitter, stronger and more confident as time goes on, and we have three or four like that at this club.
"Mark Viduka hasn't started a game since I've been here, but he wants to. It's just that he's been getting niggly injuries that have held him back.
"Emre came in for one game and then got injured. We need that bit of luck where players stay fit and get some full training under their belt."
