Keegan: 'We Can Beat Top Four Sides'!
Last updated : 10 March 2008 By Footy Mad - Editor
Kevin Keegan insists today his side is capable of beating the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United ... but the fans are pleased we only have the Blues to face, because it has been a horror season against the Top Four.
We would be grateful for a win against ANYONE at the moment!
NEWCASTLE v TOP FOUR 2007/8Arsenal 2 Newcastle 0 (Carling Cup)
Newcastle Given, Beye, Taylor, Rozehnal, Jose Enrique,Milner (Butt 70), Smith, Faye, N'Zogbia, Ameobi (Emre 60),Martins.
Arsenal's next generation showed the future is bright as a bullet header from Nicklas Bendtner and a superb strike by Brazilian Denilson beat Newcastle at Emirates Stadium.
Manager Arsene Wenger had put his faith in youth for the third-round Carling Cup tie, and last season's losing finalists showed they have both the hunger and undoubted talent in depth to make another strong run in the competition.
After dominating for long spells, the breakthrough eventually came when Bendtner powered in his first senior Arsenal goal on 83 minutes from Armand Traore's deep cross.
Captain Philippe Senderos had to clear off the line - but Denilson made sure of the result with a fine 20-yard strike.
Newcastle 0 Liverpool 3
Newcastle Given, Geremi, Beye, Rozehnal,Jose Enrique (Carr 78), Smith, Butt, Emre (Barton 51),N'Zogbia (Milner 59), Viduka, Martins.
Sam Allardyce was plunged deeper into crisis as sorry Newcastle were humiliated at home by Liverpool.
For the second game on the trot at St James' Park, the Magpies were taken apart by the visitors, and only Shay Given and good fortune prevented Rafael Benitez's men from bettering Portsmouth's 4-1 scoreline three weeks earlier.
Steven Gerrard, who was booed by the home fans for his part in England's Euro 2008 failure in midweek, opened the scoring with a 28th-minute piledriver and after the hugely impressive Fernando Torres hit the post on the stroke of half-time, Dirk Kuyt made it 2-0 within 60 seconds of the restart.
Substitute Ryan Babel capitalised on the mayhem in Newcastle's defence to make it 3-0 with 24 minutes remaining as the home fans chanted "You don't know what you are doing" and "Big Sam for England".
Newcastle 1 Arsenal 1
Newcastle Given, Beye, Taylor, Rozehnal, N'Zogbia, Milner,Barton, Butt, Geremi (Viduka 77), Martins, Smith.
Steven Taylor proved the hero as Newcastle rediscovered their form just in time for boss Sam Allardyce to hold Premier League leaders Arsenal at St James' Park.
The 21-year-old struck on the hour to end a run of three successive home league defeats to relieve the pressure on their beleaguered manager.
After a run of five games which had yielded just one point, the prospect of an Arsenal rout on Tyneside, where both Portsmouth and Liverpool had won at a canter in recent weeks, was too much to bear.
However, Allardyce's men produced a performance of real character despite Emmanuel Adebayor's delicious fourth-minute opener to deny the Gunners a six-point lead at the top of the table and prevent themselves from slipping to a third successive home defeat for the first time in the Premier League.
Chelsea 2 Newcastle 1
Newcastle Given, Beye, Taylor, Cacapa, N'Zogbia, Milner, Butt,Faye, Smith (Rozehnal 70), Duff (Viduka 89), Martins (Owen 74).
Salomon Kalou grabbed a controversial late winner as Avram Grant became the target for the Chelsea boo-boys for the first time since taking charge three months ago.
The Israeli coach, who replaced Jose Mourinho in September and who collected a new four-year contract two weeks ago, was singled out by the home fans after Chelsea left it late to overcome struggling Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.
Grant's second-half substitutions were met with chants of 'You don't know what you're doing' by the Blues faithful. It was the first time they had turned on the Israeli since he took charge.
Chelsea opened the scoring through Michael Essien in the first half and squandered a host of chances before Nicky Butt scrambled a 55th-minute equaliser.
United looked to have earned a point but Kalou tucked the ball home three minutes from the end after it had rebounded to him off Claudio Pizarro.
The United players were incensed the goal was awarded as the Ivory Coast striker looked to be in an offside position but their protests cut little ice with referee Mike Riley.
Man Utd 6 Newcastle 0
Newcastle Given, Carr, Taylor, Cacapa, Jose Enrique,Milner (Viduka 64), Smith, Butt, N'Zogbia, Duff,Owen (Rozehnal 82).
Hat-trick hero Cristiano Ronaldo led a merciless second-half destruction of crisis-club Newcastle as the Red Devils soared back to the top of the table.
While the managerless Magpies stagger from one setback to another, the Red Devils seem intent on adding a 10th Premier League title to their regained status as the world's richest club.
And with Ronaldo in this mood, it is difficult to see how they can be stopped.
After a goalless opening period, the Portugal winger broke Newcastle's resistance with a low free-kick, added a startling second with a neat finish to a move involving Wayne Rooney and double scorer Carlos Tevez, then completed his first Red Devils three-timer two minutes from time.
Arsenal 3 Newcastle 0 (FA Cup)
Newcastle Given, Carr, Taylor, Cacapa, Jose Enrique (Rozehnal 77), Milner, Butt, N'Zogbia, Duff (LuaLua 82), Smith, Owen.
Emmanuel Adebayor grabbed a brace to help Arsenal forget their midweek humiliation by Tottenham and fire the Gunners into the fifth round of the FA Cup as Newcastle were beaten 3-0 at Emirates Stadium.
The Togo striker, who apologised for his bust-up with team-mate Nicklas Bendtner during the 5-1 Carling Cup drubbing, struck twice in the second half to end the brave resistance of Kevin Keegan's battling side - set to return here next week in the Barclays Premier League.
An own goal from Nicky Butt in the closing moments ended a frustrating afternoon for the visitors, who had enjoyed good spells, but just lacked a cutting edge in the final third.
Arsenal 3 Newcastle 0
Newcastle Given, Carr, Taylor, Cacapa, N'Zogbia,Milner (Ameobi 73), Butt, Rozehnal (Barton 57), Duff, Smith,Owen.
In-form striker Emmanuel Adebayor continued his fine goalscoring run as he set Arsenal on their way to a 3-0 win over Newcastle, which sent the Gunners back to the top of the Barclays Premier League.
The Togo international, whose best efforts could not lead his country to the African Nations Cup, crashed in a flying header five minutes before the break to make it nine goals in his last seven appearances - scoring in each and netting the opener in three successive league matches.
A superb 25-yard strike by Mathieu Flamini midway through the second half and another from Cesc Fabregas made sure of an 11th home win for Arsene Wenger's men, who leapfrog over Manchester United, for 24 hours at least.
Newcastle 1 Manchester United 5
Newcastle Given (Harper 46), Beye, Taylor, Faye, N'Zogbia, Milner (Geremi 84), Butt, Barton (Carroll 61), Duff, Smith,Owen.
Cristiano Ronaldo turned in another superb display as Manchester United made the most of Newcastle's woes to close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to three points.
The Portugal international claimed a double either side of half-time to take his tally for the season to 29, with Wayne Rooney, who had opened the scoring on 25 minutes, adding a brace and substitute Louis Saha scoring against his former club after Abdoulaye Faye had pulled one back.
Liverpool 3 Newcastle 0
Newcastle Harper, Beye, Faye, Taylor, Jose Enrique,Milner (Geremi 44), Butt, N'Zogbia, Duff (Martins 58), Owen,Smith.
Kevin Keegan's Newcastle misery deepened on the ground where he is rightly still remembered as a playing legend in the heady days under Bill Shankly.
As a manager, Keegan has inherited a feeble, spineless Newcastle outfit who have now gone 12 Barclays Premier League games without a victory.
Liverpool cruised to their fourth successive league win, the first time they have achieved that measure of consistency for 13 months, and they will head off to their Champions League night of destiny against Inter Milan next week high on confidence.
It was again their scoring double act of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres who put victory beyond doubt before the captain was withdrawn on the hour to protect him for Tuesday's date in the San Siro.
