New £5million signing Ciaran Clark made his debut in the heart of the defence alongside Chancel Mbemba.

Lascelles, who was introduced as a second-half substitute late on, posted on his personal Twitter account his support for the side despite his omission from the line-up.

Lascelles, 22, was named as the club captain at the start of the season and he watched his team-mates give lift-off to their Championship campaign.

Benitez revealed that his side were working on tactics to break down defensively solid teams, after becoming unstuck in their first two league games against Fulham and Reading.

A double from Dwight Gayle and goals from fellow new signings Isaac Hayden and Matt Ritchie cancelled out a penalty from Garath McCleary on the stroke of half-time.

Newcastle chopped and changed captains last season, with Fabricio Coloccini, Moussa Sissoko and Jonjo Shelvey all donning the armband.

Lascelles is believed to have caught Benitez’ eye towards the end of last season after becoming a big voice in the dressing room.

The young defender will be hoping to regain his place in the starting line-up on Saturday when his side visit Bristol City.
