On the BBC programme "Football Focus" he said the local newspaper Evening Chronicle is "the gospel".
The ex-Liverpool defender was very critical of Kevin Keegan's defensive tactics during KK's spell as manager, and the Toon boss told him: "If you can do better ... come and join us".
Lawrenson took up the offer, in 1997, but left when Keegan called it a day.
Mark Lawrenson: "The fans are second to none. They know their football, love their team, and all they want is a little bit of success.
"The pressure is there, but Newcastle is a big city with only one club, and that is probably part of the problem.
"The fans live and breath Newcastle United.
"The local newspaper wants a story EVERY night, and the Evening Chronicle is the gospel!'
Well, I'm sure John Gibson and Alan Oliver will be proud to hear that.
