Speaking to Radio Yorkshire, Bowyer has particularly praised former club Leeds United, who he credited with the best support he experienced.
The 38-year-old said: "The crowd were unbelievable home and away, probably the best crowd I played at.
"I played at bigger stadiums like Newcastle, who had 45,000, 50,000 but Leeds I'd say vocally on those European nights, it sent a shiver down your spine, they were special nights."
Bowyer played for Leeds between 1996 and 2003, racking up more than 200 appearances, and scored goals in the Champions League against the likes of AC Milan and Barcelona.
Newcastle were his next club, where he played for three seasons, although the standout memory of his time there was an on-pitch bust-up with teammate Kieron Dyer.
He later signed for West Ham, Birmingham City and Ipswich Town, and retired in 2012.
Bowyer now runs a carp fishing lake in France.
