Southampton chairman Leon Crouch has overseen the removal of the controversial statue of club legend Ted Bates from outside St Mary's, just one week after it was unveiled.
The £112,000 statue, a tribute to former player, manager and club president Bates who served the club for 66 years until his death in 2003, was derided by supporters for looking nothing like its subject and being out of proportion.
A statement from the Ted Bates Trust, of which Crouch has taken over as chairman, read: "We have removed the statue of the club stalwart and we are now exploring our options.
"We fully accept the sculpture was not a fitting tribute to Ted and we are determined to do all we can to ensure there is a monument worthy of the man who gave us 66 years of service."
Here in the North-East, many critics felt the Angel Of The North was an "eye-sore" when it first went up on the roadside of the A1, but since it has won several awards for art.
Let's hope Shearer's statue doesn't end up in the bin, like the one at Southampton.
