I remember Terry McDermott and Alan Kennedy in the 1970's; Peter Beardsley in the 1980's; and Andy Carroll and Jose Enrique in modern times.
Three of those five returned ... but not before Liverpool got the best out of them and won titles and European honours.
I remember Newcastle playing at Anfield and Beardsley actually going to the Kop to wave to them, knowing he would be signing for them within days.
That was a gut-wrenching feeling, knowing you best player was lured by Liverpool's success, and it happened often.
But the boot is on the other foot, although (sadly) Newcastle won't be the club making the bid,
We read Manchester City will launch a £30million-plus bid for Raheem Sterling as soon as the summer transfer window opens.
"Outgoing champions City are determined to beat off interest from Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United by blowing them away in the race for the Liverpool star.
"They have made England forward Sterling their No1 close-season target and believe they can tempt Liverpool to sell their prize asset after his contract stand-off at Anfield.
"Liverpool are adamant they will not sell Sterling this summer, but City have their minds set on testing the resolve of Anfield's top brass.
"Kop boss Brendan Rodgers will NOT fine Sterling after pictures emerged of him using nitrous oxide, days after the Sunday Mirror ran snaps of him with a shisha pipe, but he will talk to him about his future conduct."
