Chronicle: "United are ready to write off the £10m they spent on Albert Luque - to save themselves paying the striker around £9m in wages.

"Luque is on his way back to Spain to join Levante and there is talk that he will be going there on a season's loan.

"But I understand United are considering letting Luque go on a free, cutting their ties with the Spanish striker completely.

"Luque still has three seasons left on his five-year contract and if he stayed at St James' he would pocket £9m in wages."

If Luque does go to Levante, he will link up with former Toon winger Laurent Robert.

French player who was a last minute signing from Paris St Germain after Zenden let down Bobby Robson and joined Chelsea rather than Newcastle.

Tricky left-winger who started brilliantly, but suffered after a game against Liverpool when Jamie Carragher kicked him from one end of the field to the other.

Went through a lull, but pulled himself out of it.

Cost £9.5m. Had trouble with Robson because he insisted telling the world his thoughts on his website.

Souness arrived and said he was a waste of talent because he only looked good going forward and would not help out in defence.

Was dropped for a game at Sunderland, and stormed out of the Stadium of Sh*** to try and get a taxi. But made a quick u-turn when he walked straight into a gang of Mackems outside.

Joined Portsmouth in 2005 but left with a parting shot for Souness.
