The stunt, funded by Sunderland fans, meant the message ‘5 in a row 5underland’ was in full view of Magpies supporters as the first half of the Newcastle United vs Tottenham game got underway.
It is believed a group of around 200 Black Cats fans clubbed together to raise around £1,000 to hire the light aircraft.
Attached to it was a banner which read ‘5 In A Row’ - for recent derby wins - which showed their confidence despite massive relegation worries.
Alan Elliott, who runs air-ads.com, the company behind the famous ‘Wrong one - Moyes out’ banner which flew over Old Trafford, confirmed his company was behind the message.
And he told the Chronicle they quickly faced harsh criticism for taking part in the prank.
He said: “It was just another job to us. We are asked to do jobs and we agree.
“We were told to go around the stadium five times... so there must be something significant about that number five. So that was our brief, to circle five times. It’s only football, it’s not like it’s a world war.”
The pilot set off from Blackpool and arrived at Shotton Airfield near Peterlee in County Durham at 2.30pm. It then set off again for an hour and a half sky based mission to wind up NUFC fans.
Alan said hiring planes with banners can be costly and the banner would have set Sunderland fans back a considerable amount.
He said: “It’s a significant amount of money, it’s not cheap to do.
“Who’s behind it is all over the fans forums. I just got the request by email and that was it.”
The plane landed back at Shotton Airfield at 4.30pm.
I'm sure there will be a reply when the Mackems get relegated this season.
