Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley will sell the club to Amanda Staveley and PCP Capital Partners if they return with an improved offer of £300million, according to the Daily Mail.
The report claims that Staveley and PCP’s initial offer was around £250million, and that has been rejected by Ashley resulting in a tense stand-off between the two parties.
It is said that Ashley would accept an offer of £300million, as long as there were no clauses attached to the deal.
This would be contrary to a previous report from The Times, which claimed that Ashley wanted £350million for the Magpies after rejecting an opening bid that could rise to £300million.
The Mail claim that Staveley is aware of a second bidder interested in the club, and is still keen to wrap up a deal, with insiders rejecting reports that she was ready to walk away if their £250million bid was not accepted soon.
Staveley, who would reportedly be the face of the club if a deal is struck, will however have to return with an improved offer for any progress to be made in talks.
A regular pattern of new claims surrounding Staveley’s first and second bids for the club is now emerging, and it is impossible to know who to believe.
If the first bid was of £250million, then there was never any way that Ashley would have accepted it.
The promising new angle in this report is Ashley’s willingness to sell for £300million.
This would seem to be a lowering of his previously-reported asking price, and would facilitate a deal being made sooner rather than later.
However, the possibility of a deal being made before Christmas is now fading badly, and with it the chance of Rafa Benitez having a significant January transfer kitty.
