Tavernier is captaining United in the Citibank Hong Kong Football Club International Soccer Sevens tournament this weekend.
Mathieu Debuchy is the club’s first-choice right-back, but Danny Simpson has played his last game for the club, so the 21-year-old could get his chance.
He has previously had spells at Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons, Carlisle United and Gateshead.
James Tavernier: “It’s about getting as many games as I can.
“If I do that, it’ll obviously make me a better player.
"I’ve got to work hard in training and become a better player. If I do that, I’ll get to where I want to be.
“I’ve been really close to the first team. I’ve really progressed. I’ve got to get better every season.
“Hopefully, next season I can get a lot more games, and maybe get out on loan.
“Hopefully, we can get a few more bodies into the club, and I can get a lot of games under my belt and become a better player.
“You can’t really challenge for a first-team spot if you’re on the outskirts. You need a big level of experience on your shoulders.
“That’s what I want to get. Hopefully, that can get me into the Premier League, and then I’ll be flying.”
