Martins had a hernia operation in January, but the problem flared up on the eve of United's game at Stoke City, with Martins ruling himself out of the fixture the morning of the match, angering Shearer.
The Newcastle boss went on to ask Martins to put his body on the line for the sake of the relegation-threatened club.
