Some of those critics went silent this week after United’s convincing 6-2 win over Norwich City last weekend.
And McClaren hopes that continues next week, and those who have knocked Newcastle in the early part of the season are also looking for somebody else to criticise next week after the Wear-Tyne derby at the Stadium of Light.
McClaren said ahead of the game: “That’s the Premier League for you and football in general.
“It’s why everybody follows it.
“They were picking on somebody else who’s struggling this week.
“Let’s hope next week it’s not back up to us.”
McClaren needed nine games to get his first win in charge of United and knows that Allardyce will also need time to get bedded in at the Stadium of Light.
When asked if that could work to Newcastle’s advantage, McClaren said: “You are hoping that.
“But in the past, the last four games, they have had a change of manager.
“One of their first games has been a derby and they’ve won it.
“It’s a derby game and strange things happen in them.
“Nobody can predict at all what is going to happen on the day.”

Available from M&M News, in Newcastle.
This book is a collection of the 100 Greatest Newcastle United players of all time, as voted for by NewcastleUtd-Mad.co.uk readers and a panel of journalists who contribute to the website. The players are in an order of five-per-chapter, counting down from 100 to Newcastle United's greatest ever player (as viewed by the author), but the whole point of the book is for YOU (the reader) to decide who goes where. The list is not, by any means, definitive. As with all books of this nature, whether it be "Greatest Albums"; "Best Movies Of All Time"; or "Top 100 Pin-Ups Of The Year" ... no two people have exactly the same opinion. There will be controversy over who is on the list, and chances are, more controversy over who is not. Here are the best of the best. I have painted the picture with each player's profile. Where they end up in the league of NUFC's Greatest is up to you. Because YOU have the final word.
To get a copy £9.95 - post a cheque (payable to K.Fletcher) to K Fletcher, 12 Ramsey St, Chester-le-Steet. DH3 3JH. With your own adress. Perfect for Christmas.
