James Milner was a second-half substitute to become the first Newcastle United player to play there.

Steven Taylor: "It would have been a great experience for me had I been involved - it is every player's dream to play at Wembley. The stadium looks fantastic, and I know the other Under-21 lads are really looking forward to playing there in front of such a big crowd.

"But I respect the manager's decision. He felt it was best I did not join up because I was not fully fit, and all I am thinking about now is our next game. It was frustrating missing out against Charlton and I want to be 100% fit for the Manchester City game.

"The most important thing for me is to stay fit and do my best for Newcastle United between now and the end of the season. Hopefully, I will get another chance to play at Wembley - with Newcastle United."

Italy youngster Gianpaolo Pazzini stole the limelight in the first match at the new Wembley Stadium by scoring a hat-trick and forcing a high-scoring draw against England Under-21s.

Pazzini opened the scoring in the first minute of the friendly then grabbed two equalisers in the second half after the hosts had dragged themselves back into the game.

David Bentley became the first England player to score at the new ground when he equalised in the first half, and Wayne Routledge and debutant Matt Derbyshire were the other scorers.
