During a BBC Radio 5Live discussion about Thierry Henry winning the PFA player of the year award, Oliver Holt revealed that he had voted for Craig Bellamy in the Football Writers’ player of the year poll.
"Alan Shearer has had an outstanding season for Newcastle but it has been Bellamy who has done all his running again," he explained.
"And there has been an outstanding international story this season and that is Wales, and Bellamy scored the vital goal in their historic victory over Italy."
Judging by the reaction of the Daily Telegraph’s Henry Winter though Bellamy doesn’t need to work on his acceptance speech just yet, as the award seems destined to go to Manchester United’s Ruud van Nistelrooy.
But Winter was full of praise for Jermaine Jenas after he collected the PFA young player of the year award, commenting: "Jenas deserves his award, he has been outstanding week in, week out."
