Reid also says coach Steve MacClaren should pay the price if England don't qualify for Euro 2008.

Monkey's Heed: "David Beckham has been an outstanding player, one of the best players in England and the world over the last decade.

"But he has not played what I would call a real competitive game for six months and he's been playing in a league that's Mickey Mouse.

"It's League One, League Two standard - if that."

"Steve McClaren himself said he would be judged on his results, and I've got to say that I thought it was a group that we should qualify from.

"Croatia are decent, Russia are decent, Israel are decent, but they are not in the same class as us.

"I think that it's up to other people to make that decision, but what I would say is if the manager says 'judge me by results' and we don't qualify then the results have not been good enough.

"There are better candidates. I think the players have under-performed. People in the papers and on TV said we did great in Russia apart from six dodgy minutes but I don't agree.

"I thought Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell and the two full-backs were too deep, and that we were very, very negative. So when you talk about tactics I can't agree with people.

"I think the players have to take some responsibility and in certain games they have been poor.

"What also disappointed me is that I thought from seeing them at Wembley that Russia were poor at the back and we hardly put any pressure on them in Moscow.

"We hardly got over the halfway line and that can't be right - the full-backs were never in their half and in modern football the full-backs often provide the width.

"We have quality players to win these games and in certain circumstances we have not been positive enough. I thought we had a negative attitude and I think that's cost us."
