Ex-Magpie flop Albert Luque, arguably the most gutless player ever to wear black and white, says Newcastle is a bad move.
United have moved quickly to tie up a £2million deal for Perez, who is on the brink of signing a five-year-contract to join the Magpies. There was also interest from Arsenal, Swansea, Everton and Portuguese giants Porto, but Newcastle nipped in first.
Luque, a £9million signing endured an unhappy spell at Newcastle, making just 21 appearances and I don't think he got mud on his strip at any time in that spell.
Albert Luque: “The two years I spent there were the two worst on a personal level.
“Newcastle is a great club but if I could go back it is an experience that I would not repeat.
"The step that Ayoze has taken shows tremendous courage on his part, but it’s going to be a challenging move.
"It is a football team that plays a very English style, they are very direct and when you go there they give you respect but they prefer players who come from their own area.
“The club is financially very healthy but every two years they want to start over again and they have a never-ending need to change things.
“The contract that he has got will have delighted him but it is a difficult place to go. All three of the Spanish players who have gone there were warned that it was a difficult move and none of the Spaniards were a success.
“It will not be easy and he will have to do it himself. He will be alone there without any help. It will be tough for him and maybe Porto would have been a better option for him.”
