Robbie Elliott has been handed the title "assistant strength and conditioning coach" with the Geordie set to work under former Crystal Palace fitness guru Mark Hulse.

Steve Round joined Everton last week, and Kevin Keegan was quick to bring in a Geordie replacement.

Elliott: "I'm coming in under Mark Hulse who is the head man and I am coming in to help him with the first team and reserves.

"You always know when the time is right and I knew that quite quickly into the season.

"But it was definitely the right time and I made the right decision.

"It was always the line I wanted to go in.

"The way it has turned out though couldn't be better, from hanging my boots up, I have come straight to Newcastle on the strength and conditioning side.

"The Keegan era was the highlight of my career and if the club can get anywhere near that again, it would be great.

"We'll wait and see but I have really enjoyed it. And after doing my cruciate at 18 if somebody had told me 17 years later I would be still going I'd have laughed at them.

"It's great to link up with Kevin and Terry McDermott and Arthur Cox again.

"It's nice, but the most important thing is what happens on the pitch.

"Hopefully we can build up a good team."
