Newcastle Insist Boumsong Deal Is Not Part Of Investigation

The investigation is completely separate to the inquiry carried out by Lord Stevens and his firm Quest into alleged illegal payments in Premier League football.

So our idea that the Newcastle-Rangers link concerns the transfer of Jean-Alain Boumsong back in 2005 seems well wide of the mark.

The homes of two unnamed individuals were also raided by police officers.

The clubs all stated they had fully co-operated with the police.

Newcastle plc issued a statement which read: "Newcastle United can confirm that it was visited by the City of London Police.

"The club itself is not the subject of the investigation.

"If the investigation by the City of London Police, or the ongoing internal review of operations by the club's new owners, show that the club has been the victim of any criminal activity, the club will take appropriate action."

Boumsong made 69 appearances for the Magpies, and most of them were rather poor ... if we tell the truth.

The French international signed from Glasgow Rangers for £6m (a fee that grew to almost £8m with add-on clauses).

He was Graeme Souness' first buy (after taking ex-Man U and Aston Villa defender Ronnie Johnson who was out of contract), but the deal was subject to a probe by the FA.

He signed for Juventus in the summer of 2006 for £3m.
