Referee Andy Haines blew for a foul by United right-back Chris Shanks and Mark Hughes beat goalkeeper Tim Krul to tie up the game.

James Vaughan put the Toffees ahead on 19 minutes from close range after Krul had saved from Bjarni Vidarsson at point blank range.

Shanks grabbed a 34th-minute equaliser. Matty Pattison found Shanks inside the box on the right and from 14 yards he rifled a low shot across keeper John Ruddy and in off the left post.

Kris Gate put Newcastle ahead in the 73rd minute with a shot from 18 yards found the bottom right corner.

Yet when victory looked certain, Everton were handed that dubious penalty.
