Magpies beaten but not blown away at Anfield

Newcastle United fell to another defeat on Thursday evening, losing 3-1 at title chasing Liverpool but there were signs of encouragement for the Toon fans to take from the performance.

The Magpies are yet to win an away game in the Premier League this season but shocked the Anfield crowd when they took the lead inside 10 minutes thanks to a fine long-range strike from former Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.

Newcastle’s lead was short-lived however as Diogo Jota levelled the game after 21 minutes and within 5 minutes the home side had the lead when Mo Salah continued his impressive goal scoring run.

Liverpool missed chances to increase their lead before and after half-time but a refreshingly resilient Newcastle side stuck at their task and it wasn’t until the 87th minute that the home team sealed the points, thanks to a thunderbolt from Trent Alexander Armstrong.

The result means Newcastle remain 19th in the Premier League table, 3 points behind 4th-bottom Watford.

With coronavirus having an increased impact on the fixture list, five of the upcoming weekend’s Premier League games have now been postponed with relegation rivals Watford, Southampton and Norwich all out of action. As things stand Newcastle’s home match against league leaders Manchester City on Sunday remains on.
