At the press conference to announce the England squad to face Portugal Eriksson was asked if he would recommend moving abroad to English players, after David Beckham’s successful switch to Spain.
His rather surprising reply was: “If you play for Manchester United or Real Madrid, it's more or less the same. The same with Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle. At Arsenal, there aren't too many English players - maybe two or three - so it doesn't really matter.
“But it has surprised me there are so few English players playing outside England.”
