He is probably best remembered for the quiz question "who was the last player to score for Newcastle at Wembley", and everybody would go for Alan Gowling in the League Cup final. BUT ... 'Mac' scored a penalty in that ridiculous competition the Mercantile Cup back in the late 1980s ... which many forgot about.
Anyway ... he is now manager of Carlisle United and he has hailed Liam Atkin after the former United reserve-team defender linked up with the Cumbrians this week.
McDonald: "The young players have been getting a chance at Newcastle and he was probably the next one in line. But he wants to try and play first-team football.
"He's a Newcastle lad but it's nice to see he's not just going to stay there and pick up his money.
"He wants to put his reputation on the line by coming here and challenging for a place."
