Newcastle´s Top Managerial Target Is ....

Last updated : 08 January 2015 By Footy Mad - Editor

... Frank de Boer is Newcastle’s top target to take over as head coach – in a bold new approach from owner Mike Ashley.

The Ajax boss, 44, is seen by the Toon hierarchy as a master tactician who can take the club to new levels following Alan Pardew’s departure to Crystal Palace.

Newcastle are likely to leave caretaker boss John Carver in charge for the rest of the current campaign – as revealed by Daily Mirror Sport last week.

They know de Boer will not renege on his Ajax contract mid-season, but they have put him at the top of a five-man shortlist and are willing to wait until summer.

The massive challenge for the Geordies will be to persuade de Boer that a move to St James’ Park is the right decision for him.

Ashley has no track record of recruiting top-class bosses from the Continent – having preferred cheaper options in Chris Hughton, Pardew and Joe Kinnear, following unsuccessful stints for Geordie heroes Kevin Keegan and Alan Shearer.

De Boer is in his fifth year as Ajax coach and has led the Amsterdam club to the Dutch title in all four seasons so far.

De Boer is keen to work in England, but Ashley must convince him he will be given the backing to take Newcastle forward.

 CARVER - YES OR NO?

Do you want John Carver as Newcastle United manager?

John Carver will be in control for the FA Cup - insisting he will be going for glory against Leicester City in the third round tie.

The caretaker boss even joked he was eager to get to Wembley because he needs a new suit.

When asked of the importance of the competition to North-East fans, Carver - who went to Wembley in 1999 with Ruud Gullit and back again for a last four clash with Sir Bobby Robson - said: “Very.

“I’ve been to a final and semi-final.

“The ovation we got when we didn’t even win it against Chelsea was incredible.

“It was probably the best we played when we lost 2-1.

“It would be nice for people to go to Wembley.

“And nice for me because I need a new suit.”

CHELSEA v NEWCASTLE UTD Saturday Jan 10th

STAMFORD BRIDGE - CHELSEA

What Is It Like For Away Supporters?

Away fans are located on one side of the Shed End lower tier (towards the East Stand side), where the normal allocation for league games is 3,000 tickets. For cup games the whole of the Shed End can be allocated. The view from this area of the ground is pretty good and the refreshment areas are modern looking. There are televisions on the concourses, showing amongst other things at half time, highlights from the first half. There is a range of food and drink on offer, but like a number of London Premier League Clubs it is quite pricey; 'Shed Load' Burgers (£5.60), Chicken Strips and Lattice Fries (£6), Hot Dogs (£4.20), Corn on the Cob (£4.20), Chicken Curry Pie (£3.80), Minced Beef and Onion Pie (£3.80) and Lattice Fries (£3.90). Alcohol is also available in the form of Singha Beer (bottle £4.20).

On the whole I found Stamford Bridge a pleasurable day out. There was a good atmosphere within the ground and even though there wasn't a lot of space between the home and away fan sections, in didn't feel intimidating. The stewards were also pretty laid back. I was seated in the Shed End and I did find a little difficult to go up and down the steps of the stand, due to the stand itself being quite steep and the steps between rows quite small. The only ‘real hassle' I had was trying to get through the lines of stewards situated outside the stadium at the entrance to the away section. They seemed to assume that I was a Chelsea fan and kept ushering me towards the home end. Only after showing my ticket for the visiting section for a third time did I finally make it inside!
