1. Luuk de Jong
Dutch international De Jong joined Newcastle on loan last January but failed to make on impression.
The striker failed to score a goal in his 12 appearances at the club.
He joined PSV this season from parent club Borussia Mönchengladbach and has scored an impressive 21 goals in 37 appearances.
His brother Siem is now at the Magpies but has also struggled, spending most of the season on the treatment table.
2. Romain Amalfitano
After helping Reims gain promotion to the Ligue 1, Amalfitano joined the Magpies on a free transfer in the summer of 2012.
He turned out to be a failed gamble for the Toon after he did not make a single domestic appearance and only started once for the club in Europe.
After a season’s loan at Dijon, he joined permanently at the start of this season.
The right winger has played 18 games for the Ligue 2 club as they currently lie fourth in the table.
3. Nile Ranger
So much promise surrounded this teenager when he joined the Newcastle youth ranks from Southampton.
Ultimately though, his on-field career has been hampered by his controversies off it.
So much so that if you look at the striker’s Wikipedia page, the controversy category is just as big as his career information.
Now at Blackpool, where Geordie manager Lee Clark is trying to salvage something from a horrendous season, Ranger went AWOL recently and has reportedly not attended training since November.
4. Fabrice Pancrate
Pancrate joined Newcastle on a free transfer in November 2009 during Newcastle’s season in the Championship.
He had been released that summer by PSG after five years with the French giants.
He made a great start - scoring a screamer against Watford - but was pushed down the pecking order when Wayne Routledge joined the club in the January. He was released by the club in the summer.
He joined Larissa in Greece six months after being released and then joined Nantes. The 34-year-old is now looking for a new club after his contract at Nantes ran out last summer.
5. Claudio Cacapa
The Brazilian centre-back joined Newcastle with lofty expectations after spending six seasons at Lyon and winning six league titles.
His two year on Tyneside were less than complimentary though.
Struggling with injuries and inconsistencies he failed to live up to his reputation and was released after barely featuring in the 2008-09 season - after which Newcastle were relegated.
Cacapa retired in 2011 and began a career in coaching.
He’s spent the last two years managing Brazil’s under-15s, but he was sacked from that role on February 27 as part of a reshuffle by the Brazilian FA.
6. Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Gonzales
Nacho Gonzales’ loan move to Newcastle from Valencia was both controversial and ultimately not worth it.
He was brought to the club by Dennis Wise against the wishes of then-manager Kevin Keegan.
It proved the final straw for Keegan, who would resign days later due to the fall-out with Mike Ashley.
The transfer was used by Keegan in court as he later won £2m damages from the club for breach of contract.
On the pitch, he appeared just twice for Newcastle and played just 41 minutes of football.
Now 32, the midfielder is playing in his native Uruguay for Nacional Montevideo but has played just four games, with his contract up in July.
7. Xisco
A name to make Newcastle fans shudder. Xisco joined Newcastle from Deportivo for roughly £5m but never reached the expected heights.
He made 11 appearances and scored just once, while going out on loan twice.
After five years he was released and went back to Spain where he joined Cordoba.
He is currently on loan at Segunda Division side RCD Mallorca where he has scored four goals in six games.
8. Lamine Diatta
Newcastle snapped up the former Senegal captain after he bought himself out of his Beskitas contract in March 2008.
The centre-back failed to make his mark in England though, and only played twice before being released at the end of that season.
After a failed spell in Scotland with Hamilton, he spent time in Qatar and Tunisia before joining fellow countrymen El Hadji Diouf and Habib Beye (who had recommended him to Newcastle) at Doncaster in 2011.
He retired from football after not making an appearance at the South Yorkshire club.
9. Albert Luque
Luque joined Newcastle for £9m in August 2005 after impressing at Deportivo in La Liga and the Champions League.
The pacey, young, talented winger joined just before Freddie Shephard splashed out another £17m on Michael Owen.
He scored just one league goal at Newcastle - though it was in a 4-1 win over Sunderland - before leaving for Ajax in 2007.
He finished his career with a second spell at Malaga and hung up his boots in 2011.
He is now coaching at CE L’Hospitalet in the Spanish third tier.
10. Jean-Alain Boumsong
The French international centre back surprisingly joined Newcastle in January 2005, signing a five and a half-year contract after just six months at Rangers.
Strangely at the end of that season he still received an SPL winners medal having played enough games at Rangers.
Aside from the transfer to Tyneside being investigated as part of the Stevens inquiry into corruption, his form for the Magpies was inconsistent and his early promise and popularity was wiped.
After spells with Juventus, Lyon and Panathinaikos he retired in 2013.
He is now a pundit with BeIN Sports where he can be heard commentating on Ligue 1, Ligue 2, Champions League and Europa League games.
