Hughton admitted that there have been times when the players have held their own meetings after defeats to thrash out problems - behind closed doors - said to be organised by the senior players including Kevin Nolan.
Nolan does have a big influence in the team, and he was the player who took in Andy Carroll after a court case to keep him out of trouble.
Chris Hughton: "I can tell you categorically 100 per cent that there's only one person here who selects the team and that will be the normal process.
"I will select the team.
"You sometimes confide in your assistants, very much Colin Calderwood when he was here, but certainly not with players.
"It's an impossibility. If you go down that road, it's very dangerous."
