Williamson is grateful to Watford for letting him move to Portsmouth ... but he admits the Pompey move was a disaster.

Williamson: “I owe Watford a lot.

“They gave me the chance to make the next step into the Championship, and prove that I’m comfortable playing at this level.

“I’ll always be grateful for that.

“I had a great time there, and I’ve got a lot of close friends there that I still speak to.

“I wish them all the best, but this is the one day when I’ll put that to one side to go into battle.

“They’re doing well at the minute, but it’s the one day I’ll put those friendships to one side and do whatever I can to get three points for Newcastle.

“It’ll be an interesting one.

“I’ve got a lot of good friends there, and I’ll be looking forward to going back.

“Hopefully I will get a good reception but, as I say, the vital thing is getting three points for my new club.

“Any time you get to put the Newcastle shirt on you get a proud feeling.

“To go out and represent such a big club is unbelievable.

“You can tell what the club means to the fans, and it’s a great honour every time you get that opportunity.”

One Watford website has been less than kind ...

Former Hornet (and failed Premier League wannabe) Mike Williamson has told of his wish for a warm welcome from the Watford fans when he returns to Vicarage Road - with Newcastle on Saturday - despite leaving under a rather large cloud less than 5 months ago.

'Big time charlie' Williamson, who threw a strop and a sickie when the lure of the bright lights and filthy lucre on offer at Portsmouth caught his eye, is the current pantomime dame on the Hornets 'most hated` hitlist.

The Watford boo-boys will, no doubt, be clearing their throats as we speak.

After making just 22 games for Watford, Williamson insisted "I owe Watford a lot - they gave me the chance to make the next step into the Championship... I`ll always be grateful for that".

And the sad thing is Mikey, my man, is that we were very 'grateful` to have you and your 6ft4 sized frame in our backline until you turned your back on us.

Let`s face it, Williamson might well come back to haunt us on Saturday so we can only hope that that self diagnosed 'injury` that meant he didn`t board the team bus to Swansea (and signalled a premature end to his Hornet career) springs up unexpectedly again...
