They provided coaches to away game (late in the 1970s and early 1990s) when they suffered losses because the number were not there ... but they NEVER let us down.
We got to Cambridge, Plymouth, Brighton, etc during midweek when NUFC washed their hands of away travel ... because it didn't pay!
Since then, Freddy Fletcher crushed the Supporters Club under his boot when he threatened them with legal action (for selling Toon merchandise) and eventually bought them out.
We haven't had anything like it since.
Yes we've had splinter groups backed by genuine fans and fanzines, but never anything recognised by NUFC.
The curent crop of hopefulls - NUSC - seem to have the interests of the club and fans at heart, but Mike Ashley continues to pretend they don't exist.
And until he DOES recognise them, they are wasting their time.
Today's rally from Grey's monument just before the game is a protest that is heart-felt ... but will it do any good?
The London media will jump on the story - as they do with anything negative against the Toon - but I wonder if this protest has been thought through.
We'll keep you informed.
