He was a United target over the summer but as wage demands and asking price soared, Newcastle had to count themselves out of the chase.
Instead he ended up at Aston Villa.
Alan Pardew: “He was someone we were definitely interested in and I always felt he could be an asset for us but it was a question of the finance defeating us in the end.
“Aston Villa are a bit like us in terms of them having three or four new players that they’re trying to bed in.
“They’re not exactly sure what their best team is at the moment – but I think that’s the same for a few teams, us included.
“They have some outstanding individuals, of course. And they’ll be a definite threat to us.
“Of course, we’ve had a really strong set of results so far.
“I think the confidence is still high but it has been all through pre-season and it’s very important to keep our momentum and run going.
“We know as a group that we didn’t play well enough at QPR. We rode our luck a couple of times but the rest of our play, our resilience, our work-rate and effort was very evident.
“We just need to tweak ourselves, make sure we pass the ball a bit better and threaten the opposition a bit more at Aston Villa, hopefully.”
