With four wins out of four during the month for United and four goals for Shearer, the judges didn’t feel that they could look elsewhere.
The Awards Panel said: “Sir Bobby Robson's drive for silverware has not been diminished by a slow start to the season.
“He has had to use every ounce of his experience and guile to turn things around and has now pushed Newcastle up to ninth in the league.
“When in the middle of a bad run Sir Bobby knows he can always rely on his talismanic striker.
“In a month when goals were essential, Alan Shearer weighed in with four important strikes.”
They rather patronisingly added: “This takes his league tally to nine, ahead of Owen and van Nistelrooy, not bad for a 33-year-old.”
As is traditional after collecting the award - the sixth time he has done so - Sir Bobby said it was all down to the players.
“Seven weeks ago, you wouldn’t have thought that would have been on the cards,” he said. “It just shows how short a week is in football.
“It’s a reflection of the work the players and the team have put in. I don’t kick a ball or shoot or head it out, they do.
“The players have done remarkably well under pressure to perform, and we’re now playing something like we did last year again.”
