Former Newcastle midfielder Jermaine Jenas feels it will be a ‘miracle’ if Newcastle achieve Premier League survival this season.
The Magpies currently sit 14th in the Premier League table - three points above the relegation zone - with 15 games remaining.
Rafa Benitez’s side could have moved five points clear of the drop zone had they beaten bottom placed Swansea today, but they were held to a 1-1 draw.
Jordan Ayew’s header had given the Swans a second-half lead, but Joselu’s fourth goal of the season rescued a point for the Magpies.
Despite their relatively positive league position, the Magpies have not won at home since October and face a daunting trip to league leaders Manchester City next weekend.
And Jenas is not confident about United’s survival prospects this term and feels - but for Rafa Benitez - they would ‘100 per cent go down’.
“I don’t think there has ever been a time in the Premier League era where teams are looking forward to going to St James’Park more than they are now,” Jenas told BBC Radio 5Live on Friday.
“You have got to be realistic and this Newcastle side are not a top team. It is really not.
“If they remain in the Premier League this year it is a miracle as far as I am concerned.
“When I look at them individually and if Benitez wasn’t there, they would 100 per cent go down.”
