Opinions on Kluivert

Patrick himself:

"
I'm very happy to sign for Newcastle United. I've been linked with Newcastle United on many occasions and it's good that I'm finally here now. I have played in tough competitions in Italy and Spain, and now I look forward to playing in another tough league, the Premiership.

"
I remember playing here for Barca when the fans at Newcastle clapped me as I left the pitch. That memory was good for me, and I thought of that when I considered the move here.

"I'm 100 per cent fit now and I can't wait to get started. I hope to win some big prizes here and I think we can do that because there are some good young players here at the club."

In light of speculation that he was only interested in money:

"
I've heard the accusation that I'm driven by money, but it's nonsense. My decision to come here is based purely on football and nothing else. The fact that Sir Bobby Robson is manager at Newcastle played a big part. We have met several times and I know all about Sir Bobby from his time in Holland and at Barcelona.

"The passion of the Newcastle fans suits me. It is very important for me to have a good relationship with the supporters. When I first came here with Barcelona I felt the warmth of the fans - even though I wasn't playing with Newcastle. I remember the feeling I had when I left the pitch. I get goose bumps when I talk about it".

About his Spanish disciplinary record:

"In Spain, I got many yellow cards because of my physical approach. I am hoping it will be different in England. I have played a lot of times against English clubs and I like the style of play".

On the illustrious number 9 shirt:

"He [Shearer] has been wearing the shirt for a long time, so I was willing to chose another shirt no problem, and I'm happy with 11."

Sir Bobby Robson:

"
It's exciting to have Patrick here. He's a dazzling player and at 28 he's at a great age. I think he still has his best years ahead of him to be honest.

"
The signing is one of the most signifcant here for many, many years. I get the same feeling as when the club brought Alan Shearer home.

"
He's a big player, a big name and a tremendous capture. He doesn't come cheap, but we haven't paid £25m or £10m or some of the big figures that are bandied about for strikers now.

"It's a great deal for Newcastle, Barcelona and Patrick Kluivert."

When asked about whether the arrival of Kluivert would create selection problems for the other strikers, Robson said:

"
The headache comes when you don't have enough players to choose from. It's a long season, and the more players we have the better.

"
He adds experience to our side, which we need after the departure of Gary Speed. We have a lot of youngsters here, so Patrick falls into the senior category with the likes of Alan Shearer, Shay Given and Laurent Robert. We have a good blend".

Alan Shearer:

"Patrick Kluivert is really a big-name signing for us and he has a fantastic record as far as scoring goals is concerned.

"Not only that, but he will come here next week with a lot of big club experience behind him with Ajax, AC Milan and Barcelona, as well as all his caps for Holland. All in all, this should be a very good signing for us."

Freddie Shepherd

"I think this could turn out to be the best signing of the season. Barcelona are happy, we are happy and so too is Patrick Kluivert and you cannot ask any more than that.

"I often feel that Newcastle United is held in higher esteem throughout the world of football than perhaps we think we are ourselves and this signing has proved this.

"We think we have done a fantastic piece of business for Newcastle United and it just goes to show what can be achieved in football.

"As far as Patrick is concerned, he now has all the tools at his disposal to really resurrect his career and will be playing alongside Alan Shearer, the greatest striker in Newcastle United's history."

The Statisticians:

Kluivert has scored 175 goals in 357 games - a ratio of a goal every 2 games. Internationally he is Holland's all-time record goalscorer with 40 goals in 79 games.
