Shay Given was stand-in skipper on Tuesday as Owen and Nicky Butt sat out the victory over West Brom, and with Owen only likely to make the bench, it could be Butt who takes the armband.

Owen's injury problems have ruined his Newcastle career, and rumours continued this weekend suggesting he could be away in the January transfer window.

That looks to be a cast-iron certainty if Mike Ashley is still the owner of the club.
