Srnicek has expressed his disappointment at being released following Sam Allardyce's appointment last week. Saying Glenn Roeder had plans to keep him on Tyneside for another year, although it was thought the ex-Newcastle gaffer was not ready to offer the Czech another deal.

Srnicek: "It was a big disappointment as I had agreed with the club that I would stay for a year and then end my career. Unfortunately, not everything in our lives turns out as we wish it to."

He joined the club in 1990 as understudy to John Burridge, and later became a popular figure with the fans. Some said at the time, the best Newcastle goalkeeper since Ronnie Simpson in the 1950s.

Came from Banik Ostrava in Czechoslovakia (that's what it was called then). Cost £350,000 and was capped at full level and was part of the Czech Republic's European Championship challenge.

Big and strong, but was eccentric to say the least. Went on to play for Sheff Wed.
