Czech international Pavel Srnicek kept a clean sheet in his first game for the Mags in eight years after playing for the reserves against Wigan on Monday night.

Srnicek's last game for United came back in 1997, when he kept goal against Blackburn at St James' Park, in a 1-1 draw. Prior to that he kept a clean sheet in each of his previous four league games against West Ham, Arsenal, Manchester United and Nottingham Forest.

Srnicek: "I'd love to play one more time for Newcastle United at St James' Park. The one thing I would regret is to come back and never play one game.

"I enjoyed it (the reserve match) very much - I've come back after a long time away. It's nice coming back with a clean sheet, even if it is with the reserves.

"I haven't been involved in a competitive game for four months now. I've been here for two weeks so fitness-wise I'm fit enough to play, but match fitness I'm a little bit behind.

"We all have different styles - Shay, Steve and myself. This is my style. I did it all my life so I'm not going to change it for the last two years of my football career!

"I've kept in touch with Steve Harper for a long time. He was on the phone before the game against Liverpool asking what I was doing, as they needed a goalkeeper. I said I was a free agent in Italy. I spoke with the gaffer about it, and then I came over.

"I had a great time here, I would say the best time of my career. For a player my age, coming back to Newcastle United is a dream come true."
