Perch Wants Another Taste Of Glory!

Last updated : 08 February 2013 By Footy Mad - Editor

James Perch: “I think I’m still tired from that game – I’ve never ran so much without seeing the ball.

d

“They were unbelievable that night.

"The situation about Harry Redknapp possibly going last year gave them a little boost, and the atmosphere was there for them.

“They battered us, but there’s definitely part of me thinking I don’t want that to happen again and we owe them something.

“But all of a sudden the players can’t wait for the next game and the fans are the same.

“Everybody then just wants to taste what they did the last weekend.

“We’ll go down there in a positive frame of mind.

“We know they are a great side. They’re quick, dynamic and can score goals.

“We’ve got to be aware of that, and go there with our game plan. Hopefully, we can turn them over.”

WHITE HART LANE - TOTTENHAM

What Is It Like For Away Supporters?

s

Away fans are housed in one corner of the ground in between the South & West Stands, where up to 2,900 supporters (if demand requires it) can be accommodated, in the lower and upper tiers. If you have a ticket for the upper tier then prepare yourself for quite a climb to reach the away area. You are though rewarded with a great view of the action from this section and the leg room is ample. The facilities in this modern stand are above average. On the downside there is little space between the away and home fans. As you would expect there is plenty of banter between the two, but the stewards tend to take a tougher line on the away support. On my last visit a number of fans were ejected from the ground, plus there were repeated warnings to away fans to remain seated.

One strange aspect of sitting in the upper tier is seeing the Police Control Box directly above you, where a number of uniformed faces can be seen peering down on the away supporters. Although I have not personally experienced any problems at White Hart Lane, it may be wise to exercise caution around the ground and you may consider keeping colours covered. Expect to be searched by stewards on entry to the away section.

Where To Drink?

s

Due to a number of pubs going out of business in the area around the ground, the choice for away fans is now rather limited. Simon Hornby informs me; 'The best place for away fans to get a drink is the Harringey Irish club on the Pretoria Rd which is opposite White Hart Lane station. It has two large bars showing Sky Sports, offers reasonably priced food and you can also park there for £10'. Dean Palmer adds; 'When you get off the train at White Hart Lane, go straight out of the metal gates and walk straight down the road in front of you. After a couple of hundred yards there is a car park on the left hand side, and the social club is in there. There are always a few away fans in there, and kids are also allowed in there too'.

Tim Pick a visiting Wolverhampton Wanderers fan adds; 'We drank at the Elmhust on Lordship Lane, which is about a ten minute walk away from the ground. It is large mock tudor style looking pub with 4 or 5 Sky Sports screens. There were home fans and away fans in colours mixing with out any problems. Prices were okay too (for London)'.
Carsie a Spurs fan from Belfast recommends; 'The Three Compasses which is situated in Queen Street (behind Middlesex University), which is a five minute walk from White Hart Lane Station'.

It may be an idea to drink in Central London before the game and then take a train to White Hart Lane Station. There is a Wetherspoon outlet at Liverpool Street Station from where you get the train to White Hart Lane. If you decide to take the long walk from Seven Sisters tube station to the stadium, then there are a number of pubs along the way.

Steve Dobson adds; 'I also suggest that visiting fans with a thirst for real ale, consider catching the train from Liverpool Street and stop off at Hackney Downs to visit the Pembury Tavern. Good beer and quality food. From there it is only 10 minutes on the train to White Hart Lane. The pub is only a couple of hundred yards from Hackney Downs station on Amhurst Road'. The pub which is featured in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide has no less than 16 real ales on offer! The question is, will you still then make it to the match?

Inside the ground alcohol is served in the refreshment areas. This is in the form of plastic bottles of Carlsberg (500ml). But please note that alcohol is not served in the away section at half time.

How To Get There By Car And Where To Park

Leave the M25 at Junction 25 and take the A10 towards Enfield. Continue on the A10 through Enfield and at the roundabout with the Northern Circular (A406), turn left onto the A406 (Sterling Way). Turn right into Fore Road (the A1010) which becomes the High Road and you will come to the ground on your left.

On street parking is virtually non-existent around the stadium on matchdays as a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) is in operation which means that only local residents who have a parking permit and blue badge holders can park legally. The perimeter of the zone is up to a mile from the ground and this has led to some private car parks near to the stadium charging up to £15 for the privilege. If you do park around the area, make sure that you take notice of the advisory parking notices attached to lamp posts, as otherwise you may find that you car gets towed away.

By Train Or Tube

White Hart Lane Station is the nearest to the stadium, which is only a few minutes walk away. It is served by trains from Liverpool Street. Located at Liverpool Street is a handy Wetherspoons pub, plus a cornish pasties outlet opposite. Richard Crouch adds 'The best station to get to White Hart Lane from is Northumberland Park. Come out of the station and cross the road and you are in Park Lane. It is a ten minute stroll to the ground'.

The nearest London Underground station is Seven Sisters which is on the Victoria Line. The ground is about a twenty minute walk away, but there are plenty of buses running up Tottenham High Road to the ground. Chris Knibs informs me; 'Although there are plenty of buses, not many of them go past the ground. Those that do mostly have numbers that end in a 9, so take 149, 249, 279 or 349. You can also get a normal overground train from Seven Sisters to White Hart Lane station.

Tottenham's fans pleaded with Harry Redknapp to snub England and stay at White Hart Lane on Saturday evening as the Spurs boss masterminded a brutal hammering of Newcastle.

sLouis Saha scored his first two goals for the club and there were also strikes from Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Niko Kranjcar and Emmanuel Adebayor as Spurs moved within five points of the Barclays Premier League summit.

The performance was one of the team's best of the season and came amid a background of constant adulation from the home crowd towards their manager.

The 64-year-old started the week with the prospect of jail hanging over him, but by Wednesday afternoon he found himself in the clear and in pole position to take over as England's head coach following Fabio Capello's shock resignation.

Chants of "you're Spurs and you know you are" greeted Redknapp as he made an emotional return to the dugout and "we want you to stay" rang out on several occasions as the home support made it clear that they did not want to lose their boss, who has transformed the club from relegation candidates to title chasers within just over three years.

s

Redknapp acknowledged their chants with a warm smile and wave, but it remains to be seen whether their pleas will be enough to make their boss stay at White Hart Lane.

The reality is surely that he is extremely interested in taking Capello's place and on today's evidence, it is easy to see why he is the overwhelming favourite for the post.

If any of the four-man FA board tasked with appointing Capello's successor was watching today, they will have been delighted with what they saw.

Despite being without key talisman Rafael van der Vaart, who was out with a calf injury, Redknapp's men started in devastating fashion and were two up after five minutes.

s

With barely three minutes on the clock, Adebayor played a one-two with Kranjcar and he crossed for Assou-Ekotto, who rifled home from a tight angle to score after three minutes.

Two minutes later it was 2-0. Adebayor peeled off down the right, muscled his way past Fabricio Coloccini and crossed for Saha, who turned home from six yards.

Redknapp, usually a restrained figure on the bench, sprung to his feet and punched the air with glee.

Tottenham continued to pulverise the away side and added their third in the 20th minute.

Luka Modric jinked into the box and found Adebayor and he laid the ball off to Saha, who smashed home from 12 yards.

Demba Ba curled a free-kick just wide, but otherwise Newcastle barely threatened in the first half.

Spurs were playing some of their best football under Redknapp and the popular manager was on his feet again in the 34th minute as the home side scored again.

Tim Krul's save from Adebayor's close-range shot ricocheted in to the path of Kranjcar and he swept home from 15 yards for his first Spurs goal in a year.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew turned away in disgust at his team's defending and they did little to suggest they were capable of offering anything at the other end.

Ba drove a low shot straight at Brad Friedel but Tottenham were soon on the attack again through Saha, who curled a shot just wide.

Adebayor, Assou-Ekotto and Kranjcar all missed chances in first-half injury-time.

Pardew ditched the ineffective Obertan at half-time and brought on Shane Ferguson in his place.

There was no let-up in the Spurs pressure, though, as the hosts looked for a fifth.

Bale played a delightful chip over the Magpies' back four but Adebayor mistimed his run and the Togo striker wasted another chance moments later by screwing his shot wide.

Redknapp thanked the jubilant home crowd once more as they chanted his name.

Newcastle gained more possession, but they could only muster a weak attempt on goal from Jonas Gutierrez, and moments later Krul was once again picking the ball out of his net.

Saha nodded Assou-Ekotto's cross towards Adebayor and he wrapped his right leg around his marker to poke home and make it 5-0.

With 24 minutes left Redknapp brought on Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon for Bale and Saha, who received a big hug from the Spurs manager.

Kyle Walker skinned his marker and whipped in a cross but Adebayor just missed the header that would have made it six.

Newcastle missed a great chance to score a consolation soon after but Gosling skied over from six yards after Friedel had done well to save Ba's point-blank header.

At the final whistle, an emotional Redknapp gave his thanks to all four corners of the ground before disappearing down the tunnel, clearly delighted with his team's performance.

I wasn't particularly convinced we had turned the corner with the win at Villa Park ... but this went a hell of a long way to banishing our relegation concerns.

Moussa Sissoko made a statement at St James' Park that he is a class act and he ready to 'rock and roll' in the Premiership.

lThe France midfielder marked his home debut with a 68th-minute strike to level the game at 2-2 and then blasted home a brilliant winner to further boost Alan Pardew's survival mission.

Chelsea looked to be on their way to a first victory in four attempts in all competitions when, after Frank Lampard had cancelled out Jonas Gutierrez's first-half opener by scoring his 10th Barclays Premier League goal of the season for the 10th successive campaign, Juan Mata curled home a superb 61st-minute effort.

But a rejuvenated Newcastle refused to accept defeat and Sissoko snatched a dramatic win which was secured when Steven Taylor blocked Lampard's goal-bound effort deep into injury-time.

It was meant to be striker Demba Ba's day as he returned to St James' Park, where he had given sterling service in his 18 months in a black and white shirt.

But having arrived to a less than harmonious welcome, with some Newcastle fans accusing him of chasing the money by heading for Stamford Bridge last month, he departed prematurely with a bloodied nosed to more catcalls after just 42 minutes.

The Magpies followed him down the tunnel just a few minutes later with the advantage at the end of a thoroughly entertaining 45 minutes of football.

While Ba's departure from Tyneside might have come as a major blow to Pardew, the early signs are that the recruitment drive launched in response was astutely conducted.

The confidence gained in Tuesday night's 2-1 victory at Aston Villa with new boys Mathieu Debuchy, Sissoko and Yoan Gouffran in the team was in evidence as the home side set about their task with some relish.

Papiss Cisse, the man Pardew hopes will supply the goals which once came from Ba, saw a fifth-minute effort blocked by defender Gary Cahill, but then failed to test returning keeper Petr Cech adequately when played in by Sissoko after 20 minutes and then Yohan Cabaye 16 minutes later.

Cabaye and full-back Davide Santon both sent rasping volleys just off target in an end-to-end contest in which the Magpies gave as good as they got.

However, Chelsea might have gone in front twice, Lampard blasting high over from Ashley Cole's 15th-minute pull-back, and then Ba forcing a 32nd-minute save from Tim Krul before heading the rebound inches wide under pressure from Fabricio Coloccini, whose boot caused the damage which forced his exit.

The opening goal eventually arrived four minutes before the break and from an unusual source.

Newcastle's final ball had at times been ordinary, but Santon produced a telling cross to allow Gutierrez to glance a deft header across Cech and into the bottom corner to send the home fans into raptures.

They were equally pleased to see the back of Ba seconds later but, as the whistle sounded, there was a general acceptance that they would need to produce a much better second-half display than they did at Villa Park if they were to hold on to their advantage.

Chelsea returned in determined mood to pin the Magpies back into their own half, and as Pardew's men retreated, Cisse found himself isolated in attack despite the best efforts of Sissoko and Gouffran.

They were back on terms within 10 minutes in stunning style when Lampard controlled Cole's pass on his chest, took another touch and then lashed a dipping shot past the helpless Krul.

Things might have been worse for Newcastle on the hour when James Perch gifted the ball to Oscar and the visitors broke at pace for Mata to cross for Lampard, but he headed straight at Krul.

The Dutchman was not so fortunate seconds later, however, when Torres laid the ball back to Mata, who curled a superb left-foot shot over Krul and into the top corner.

John Terry only just managed to prevent Cisse from connecting with Santon's 65th-minute cross in front of goal, but Krul had to back-pedal hurriedly to keep out Branislav Ivanovic's speculative effort from his own half a minute later.

However, the home side dragged themselves back into it with 22 minutes remaining when, after Cech had parried Gouffran's effort, Sissoko steered the rebound home.

Cech had to be at his best to palm away Sissoko's searing drive after he had run away from Cole down the right, and the former Toulouse midfielder tore the Blues open once again seven minutes from time before cutting inside Cahill, only to toe-poke his effort straight at Cech.

But the Czech Republic international could not deny the Frenchman in the final minutes when he exchanged passes with Santon before drilling a sweet drive past Cech to win it.
