The signing from Nottingham Forest was so poor in pre-season fixtures we felt he "cannot possibly get any worse" ... but he is starting to prove many Toon fans wrong.
Ryan Taylor has been banging on Chris Hughton's door demanding to know why he has not been given the opportunity to take over at right-back in our St James' Park 'mini-crisis', and I'd pay good money to hear the excuse Hughton replied with.
But the Toon boss continues to stick with HIS signing. After all, he said the team cannot be regarded as HIS team until he brings in new players ... so Perch seems to be in the side to stay ... or at least until Danny Simpson gets off his sickbed.
The groans were loud and clear on Saturday when, after believing Simpson was fit enough to play, it was announced Perch was keeping his place.
And 'Charlie Boy' (N'Zogbia) took him to the cleaners - just as the 40,000-odd knew he would.
Finally, after 88 minutes, Hughton put the defender out of his misery and replaced him, and as it happens, we snatched a (very) late equalizer and the day was saved.
So what now for the former-Forest player? A spell in the reserves? Loan him out? Give him away?
Your guess is as good as mine.
But Hughton is determined to prove us all wrong - and frankly - that scares the shit out of me!
