Man-of-the-match
Steve Harper 7/10

Could do nothing about the goal and made several important saves. Kicking was poor though.

Andy Griffin 7/10

No goal for the full-back last night, but a solid performance in defence and dangerous when he ventured forward.

Aaron Hughes 7/10

Played well at full-back and in his best position of centre-half. Never looked in trouble.

Titus Bramble 5/10

Looked shaky before having to leave the field through injury.

Andy O’Brien 5/10

Another poor show from the Irishman, who seems to have returned from the World Cup having lost both his pace and his confidence.

Nobby Solano 6/10

A busy performance from Nobby who defended well throughout, but only showed occasional glimpses of what he is capable of going forward.

Laurent Robert 8/10

Always looked dangerous and caused the Kyiv defence no end of problems. Showing signs of getting back to his best form.

Gary Speed 8/10

Outstanding performance from the veteran, controlled the middle of the park and scored the vital equaliser.

Jermaine Jenas 7/10

Struggled in the first period, but was outstanding after the break. He just keeps getting better and better.

Shola Ameobi 5/10

Shola’s finishing was abysmal, but his hard work and physical presence were vital in defending the slender lead.

Alan Shearer 7/10

Well marked throughout, but still managed to cause problems. Cleverly won the penalty and showed nerves of steel to convert the spot kick. Retained possession superbly in the last ten minutes.

Subs

Nikos Dabizas 7/10

Played 65 minutes and defended well. Had a good chance to score, but saw his header saved.

Olivier Bernard 7/10

Easily Bernard’s best performance of the season. Solid in defence and showed some nice touches going forward.

Kieron Dyer 7/10

If this is Kieron half fit I can’t wait until he has fully recovered from his back injury.
