They came to SJP as a Fourth Division side pushing for promotion, while the Magpies were hovering above the relegation in the First Division (what is now the Premiership).
Having struggled to beat another Fourth Division side, Northampton Town, in the third round 2-1, Newcastle did a little better against Preston in round four.
We ran out 2-0 winners with goals from Glenn Roeder and Paul Goddard in front of a crowd of 30,495. But lost to Spurs 1-0 at White Hart Lane in round five.
Our last visit to Deepdale was a Second Division fixture in October 1980.
Newcastle won 3-2 with goals from Rafferty and Shinton (2). Not our best season, Shinton was top scorer with only SEVEN goals
