Newcastle United are no closer to reaching agreement with Rafael Benitez over a new contract, according to George Caulkin.
The Times’ long-standing north-east correspondent reported in a column on Thursday that there “have been no substantive discussions” about an extension to his deal, which expires in June, since last summer.
Caulkin explains Benitez was offered, first, a five-year contract and then a one-year extension but talks have failed to get off the ground because the Spaniard wanted “investment in the team, training ground and academy”.
