Newcastle are being linked with a move for West Ham's Darren Randolph after Rafa Benitez confirmed he wants another keeper.
Benitez has now turned his attention to a keeper after landing Jacob Murphy and Javier Manquillo, and Randolph could be the man.
Middlesbrough want Karl Darlow while Tim Krul is training with the Under-23s and facing an uncertain future at the club, leaving just Rob Elliot, and Benitez wants more competition between the sticks.
Benitez, speaking at Sports Direct in Dublin, said: “The main thing for Rob Elliot is to be fit and he’s training hard after playing the final three games of last season. He is a good goalkeeper but I want him to compete.
“You can’t have players that think this is easy because they are the only one in that position.
“Hopefully we can bring in a new goalkeeper and this competition will be good for the team.”
Randolph is unlikely to get much first-team action at West Ham following their capture of Joe Hart on loan from Manchester City.
