Rafa Benitez has told his Newcastle United players to look at the clash with Nottingham Forest as an “opportunity” in the final game of 2016.
The Magpies boss pulled no punches after the loss to Sheffield Wednesday at St James’ Park and made it clear that United’s reaction, after falling behind to former Celtic man Glenn Loovens’ goal, wasn’t up to scratch.
Benitez also dismissed any claims that his team were missing the suspended Jonjo Shelvey, with the England international serving the first of a five-game ban against the Owls.
When asked if Newcastle were struggling to cope without the former Liverpool and Swansea City midfielder, Benitez replied: “You never know. We know he’s a very good player but we still have enough quality on the pitch to win games.
“That’s what we have to do.
“We have to learn how to play without him and how to play better without him.”
Benitez will now look for an improvement against a Nottingham Forest team that are threatened by relegation and sitting in 18th place in the Sky Bet Championship.
The Spaniard said: “Every game is an opportunity to change things when something is wrong and we’ll try to do that.”
Benitez also touched on Newcastle’s inability to show their game management during the defeat against the Owls with the defeat proving to be United’s fourth on home soil this season.
The loss meant that United surrendered top spot in the Championship and Benitez said: “I’d never say a draw is a good result, it depends how the game is going on.
“You have to make sure you don’t give them the possibility to have three or four counter attacks and finish the game.
“You have to be sure if you can concede, you can carry on controlling the space.
“If it’s 0-0 in the first half you have to be sure you don’t give them the chance to create a lot of chances.
“We did that, we made the mistake and by the end, we were playing with two strikers, kicking the ball long and giving them the chance to play counter attack.
“I don’t like to see the team doing that.
“If you concede and you lose that’s one thing, if you concede you can improve in the game and we have to improve when that happens.”
His Seagulls side beat QPR 3-0 on Tuesday to go two points ahead of United.
“There’s a resilience, no doubt,” Hughton said. “It’s come from the experience of last season, and we also recruited well in the summer.
“I think we’re stronger as a squad than last season, and there’s a real desire at this club at the moment.
“We’re also very conscious of how difficult this league is, and how tough these games are, but at the moment we’re doing very well.”
The Seagulls will be in action at home against Cardiff City at the same time United take on Forest at St James’ Park.
