Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez will be questioning why he left Mitrovic on the bench after the loss to Norwich City, Paul Merson said on Sky Sports.
The Serbian was in fine form at Carrow Road on Saturday afternoon as he bagged two goals in the game. It was not enough, however, to see his side to victory as a 93th minute goal from Norwich defender Marcus Olsson saw his side secure a vital three points.
The result left Newcastle six points from safety with just seven games remaining, and Merson says that Benitez will be questioning his decision to leave Mitrovic on the bench.
“Benitez on the way back will sit there and think ‘why didn’t I play Mitrovic (from the start)?’” he told Sky Sports.
“If they had played him, they wouldn’t have lost. He was outstanding, he caused absolute trouble.”
Mitrovic certainly appears to be a man on a mission, intent on playing a big part in Newcastle’s fight against relegation from the Premier League.
The striker has delivered when needed in recent weeks, first scoring a late goal to secure a point against Sunderland and now scoring two on Saturday.
