But it wasn't all gloom for Newcastle - they got the backing from manager Walter Smith who says the Geordies will be a force in the Premiership this season.
Walter Smith: "It was a good workout.
"They made us work extremely hard. Newcastle are a good side, I think they will do well in the Premier League this season.
"The result is never the most important thing at this stage of the season but it was nice to get a win."
