Robert blames lack of fitness

The Frenchman had trained just once in the ten days leading up to the game because of a knee injury, and it showed as he failed to find his best form, although Sir Bobby chose not to substitute him.

His contribution was restricted to the long throw that led to the Craig Bellamy’s goal and one fantastic set-piece delivery that created a chance for Gary Speed during the first half.

Unfortunately, he struggled with his defensive duties and Rovers exploited the space down our left flank to good effect time and again, eventually leading to their equaliser.

Robert told the Evening Chronicle: "My knee is okay and there were no problems with it.

"After the game at Birmingham last week there were also no problems, but then on the flight home it all came up and I could hardly drive home.

"I went to France and spoke to my doctor and he said it was okay for me to go back and play.

"But I only got back into training on Tuesday and my fitness was not very good against Blackburn and I know I did not play very well."

Hopefully Robert will have recovered his full fitness by the time Middlesbrough visit St James’ Park, as in recent months he has established himself as our chief attacking threat.
