Newcastle have been linked with a move for another striker following reports of unsuccessful bids for Paris-Saint Germain’s Mevlüt Erdinç and Sporting Lisbon’s Yannick Djaló.
The new name in the frame is Romanian international Andrei Cristea after his club Dinamo Bucharest claimed they have had an approach from the Magpies for the 26-year-old.
The pacey striker was his league’s leading scorer last season with 16 goals and is available for around £1.7m, a fee which would suit United’s limited budget.
Although Cristea has been a consistent goalscorer in domestic football, he has failed to find the net in nine appearances for Romania and a further 14 for the under-21 side.
